Melbourne Cup the ultimate goal for Highclere-owned Durston

Connections of Durston hope the Chris Waller-trained seven-year-old will make up into a Melbourne Cup prospect after landing the Carlton Wyong Gold Cup on Friday.
James McDonald provided a masterclass of a ride aboard the Highclere-owned gelding, coming wide and being eased down in defeating stablemates Yiyi and Our Intrigue in the Listed contest, run over an extended 10 furlongs.
Waller has now annexed the AUS$200,000 feature at the New South Wales track eight times in 11 years.
Harry Herbert, managing director and founder of Highclere Thoroughbred Racing, thinks the sky could be the limit for the former David Simcock inmate, who was last seen in Britain finishing eighth to Scarlet Dragon in the Duke of Edinburgh at Royal Ascot in 2020.
“Durston won the Wyong Cup in great style,” said Herbert. “He will feature in big races now, hopefully culminating in a Melbourne Cup. He is a smart horse and that was a terrific performance.”
